Christmas Giant Lantern Festival

The town of San Fernando near Manila is famous for its parol festival. The lanterns come in all shapes: stars, flowers, Christmas trees. Some parol are lit by more than 1,000 electric bulbs! Crowds line the streets waiting for the lantern parade. The parol turn as they pass by, their colors and patterns changing lie kaleidoscopes. Some parol are so huge they have to be carried on a truck. The most spectacular parol wins a prize.

Men build the giant lanterns' wooden and wire frames.Women and children finish the parol, creating colorful designs out of cellophane, rice paper, paper garlands, and shells.
